#TBT: Mississipi Goddam | Nina Simone

I recently watched "What Happened, Miss Simone?" the verbatim documentary about the infamous jazz heroine, Nina Simone. I was shocked by how much I didn't know about this amazingly gifted and passionate person. I'm sure she's rolling over in her grave knowing that the documentary even exists. I am so glad it does, though. The importance of the film extends so far beyond the recount of her life and whirlwind of a career. It is yet another reminder of the horrific injustices that people around the world face everyday. To be honest, I can't blame her for mentally degrading to the point that she did - being in her position is something that I could never imagine. Ultimately, Nina, along with so many others died for her culture, as a martyr for the black community. It is such a shame (that word doesn't even begin to cover it) that she was driven to that point of destruction. Nevertheless, her musical legacy will live on forever, culminating with this film and the incredible Lauryn Hill tribute album, "Nina Revisited".

Here is a track that really resonated with me during the film, and most certainly with the people who lived during that time in history.
