A Sentimental Note Feat. surrenderdorothy | Rememberance Day Edition

It's not often that I see my grandparents, but when I do I'm always honoured to be in their presence. The first time I realized what Rememberance Day meant was in my first grade classroom where my grandfather came to talk about his experience fighting for Canada in World War II. He doesn't usually open up that much, but he recalled leading a troop and having a rod-iron fence explode just feet away from him - he saw many of his friends die that day. We attribute this event as the cause of his deafness. "If I had taken one more step," he said, "I wouldn't have been here." He looked at me. "You wouldn't have been here." My six-year-old self sat on his lap and wiped the tears that fell down his cheek. I have today off from university. But it's not a day we were given to get over a hangover, a day to do that last minute homework we should have done MUCH earlier, or a day to do nothing. Today comes with sacrifice. Today is covered in scars. Today is a day to remember.

Lest We Forget.
