Feature | Waiting For Go
East West Melody had the pleasure of meeting one of these guys, Connor Mullin, while abroad in Australia this past year. Him and the rest of the band - made up of five long time friends - are Glasgow, Scotland natives, and audibly so. They’ve managed to put together a charged set of tunes that feature killer melodies and electronics that unfold around their self-written lyrics. We were lucky enough to get in touch with the band this past week and this is what they had to say about their music, the band and life in the UK.
EWM: We heard you guys write your own music and being that we watched “Almost Famous” the other day we have to ask: Do you have to be in love to write a love song? Do you have to be sad to write a sad song? What’s your key to song writing?
WFG: We kind of have a policy against writing full on love songs. They’ve always turned out really cheesy in the past and we try to avoid that. We do write about relationships and the feelings that come with that, but more recently we tend to focus on the darker side of things, like the feelings that surround a break up, or how you feel when things aren’t working out like you thought they would. Makes for more interesting songs! Our song writing process isn’t something we ever really thought about, it just kind of happens I suppose. Someone will bring in an idea (A guitar hook, a synth line, a melody idea) and we all just try and work around that in the studio. Some of our best ideas have come really randomly; sometimes the best ideas come when you’re just jamming in the studio, not trying to look for a new song. In my experience, it never works out that well when you try and force it.
EWM: Do you guys identify your music as having an East or West Coast sound? FYI: We’re thinkin US coasts.
WFG: That’s a funny one, we hear that saying a lot but being from the UK we probably couldn’t tell you if our sound was more East or West Coast. I suppose a lot of our stuff has a kind of Summertime / Beachy vibe to it so I’d probably say West Coast. Plus I’m really into The Neighourhood right now and they’re all about that West Coast vibe so we’ll go with that.
EWM: Sounds like you guys have been really busy with gigs lately. Any highlights? What’s next for Waiting For Go?
WFG: Yeah it’s been pretty busy recently. We played Tramlines festival in Sheffield recently which was cool, we got to finish our set and then go see Public Enemy on the main stage. Next up we’re doing some more recording and shooting some videos. We have an intimate Glasgow show with a band called Coasts next month (Who I've included in the playlist) You should definitely check them out.
EWM: 4 song playlist of what you guys are listening to right now…GO!
"Strobe" by Deadmau5
"Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood
"Sleepwalking" by the Chain Gang of 1974
"Oceans" by Coasts
EWM: If you could collaborate with absolutely anyone who would it be?
WFG: We'd love to do a track with Lorde. Massive fan of her album and would love to bring some of that vibe into what we do. I’d also love to collaborate with one of these mega dance producers like Diplo or Deadmau5. EWM: Top 5 Favourite Artists under 30?
WFG: In no particular order: Lorde, The 1975, Disclosure, Haim, Foals.
EWM: Lastly, and just for fun, if you had an unlimited amount of money for one day how would you all spend your day?
WFG: We’d probably buy a private jet; load it full of booze and guitars and fly to Ibiza for the day. It’s only about a 2-hour flight so we could probably fly out in the afternoon and get there in time to going out to one of the massive clubs like Cream or Ushuaia.
