Feature | Xavier Dunn

Check out Xavier Dunn's interview with EWM! We got to know Xavier a little better as he tells us his must-hear songs as well as his reasoning behind his most recent cover of A$AP Rocky's "Fuckin' Problems".

When East West Melody heard Xavier Dunn's first song on Soundcloud "Make The Move" (reminiscent of indie-fave Bon Iver), we were immediately hooked. Dunn then released a cover of our guilty pleasure, A$AP Rocky's "Fuckin' Problems", and we knew we had to connect with Xavier Dunn A$AP (...pun intended).

EWM: Your most recent cover of A$AP Rocky's "Fuckin' Problems" is pretty out there, considering your sound – what was your inspiration? If the roles were reversed, what rap artist would you like to see do a cover of what singer-songwriter/indie song?

XD: A good friend suggested I do the cover to see what could happen to a rap song when mixed with a folk arrangement. For me, it was also a challenge to see if I could do it. I really enjoyed putting together the melody for the lyrics and instrumental harmonies for the composition.

I would love to hear Kendrick Lamar perform "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver.

EWM: Who are you listening to right now? Make us a 4 song playlist...GO!

XD: My fav playlist right now is

1 - "Bats In The Attic" by King Creosote & Jon Hopkins.

2 - "Fellow Feeling" by Porter Robinson

3 - "In The Dirt" by S. Carey

4 - "Portal Spillage" by Tipper

EWM: You’re trapped in an elevator. Who, living or dead, would you want trapped in there with you?

XD: If I was trapped in an elevator I would love to be trapped in with Amelia English. Why? Because apart from my family, she is my best friend. And nothing would be more fun than hanging with her in any situation. If I'm trapped in an elevator, I don't want to be trying to give a good impression of myself to a complete high profile stranger whilst trying not freaking out about the fact that I am trapped in an elevator. And on top of that, not "fan-girling' out if it was a famous stranger.

EWM: Finally, where does your music identify itself, East or West Coast?

XD: If I had to choose where my music lie .. between East and West Coast. East Coast all the way.

~

A Kendrick Lamar cover of "Skinny Love" is something we'd DEFINITELY love to hear! Check out Xavier's picks here in our playlist section.
